Classical fans often turn to their favorite music for inspiration, and on this Carolina Live we have music to provide just that. Inspired By the Classics is the title of a concert from the Greenville Symphony Orchestra’s chamber series, and there are works from Richard Strauss, who was inspired by Francois Couperin, from Sergei Prokofiev, inspired by Haydn and Mozart, and from Tchaikovsky, who also found his muse in Mozart. In addition, the Davidson College Choral Arts Society and Pro Arte Orchestra present a moving performance of Dan Forrest’s Requiem For the Living.
WDAV Classical Public Radio’s third annual Young Chamber Musicians competition drew entries from across the country and Europe, and the four finalists represented some of the nation’s finest music programs. The Junior Division featured a “battle of the coasts,” with ensembles from New York City and Los Angeles competing. In the Senior Division a group from The Cleveland Institute of Music went up against one from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. The concert was presented in the Duke Family Performance Hall on the Davidson College campus and broadcast live, with prizes awarded not only by the panel of judges but also an “Audience Choice” award determined by text voting.
Schubert & Mozart is the title the Winston-Salem Symphony bestowed on the concert we feature this week, but it must be noted that another excellent composer contributes to the music—Benjamin Britten. Guest conductor Mark Stringer leads the orchestra in Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony No. 8, Britten’s Concerto for Violin & Viola, and Mozart’s final symphony—No. 41 in C, “Jupiter.” It’s a program of variety and exciting performances, so be with us for this edition of Carolina Live.
The South Carolina Philharmonic performs Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and a Suite from Cinderella by Sergei Prokofiev. But first, hear Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain, re-orchestrated by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov played by the South Carolina Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.
The Lancaster Cultural Arts Center is the setting of an inventive program presented by North Carolina-based pianist Pam Howland. An acclaimed interpreter of Chopin, she performs beloved selections by the Polish composer paired with Beatles pop standards. Then the program shifts to Greenville for highlights from a concert in that orchestra’s Chamber Classics series featuring the overture to a favorite Mozart opera and one of his final symphonies.
This program features performances from two separate concerts, both performed at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul, one of fourteen different venues used during the 2013 festival.
